Following on from my resent post on the use of acupuncture to treat Hay fever Ive had a number of information requests. Patients have been enquiring about the wider use and application of acupuncture, How it works and requesting further details. As with all of my posts I’m delighted to offer as much information as patients could possibly need and Id like to thank those who encouraged me to post further.
The Origins of acupuncture date to the period around 5000 BC. Meaning it was around before Christ and the Egyptian pyramids. It was intertwined with the Taoist religion and was central to the lives of the Chinese. Mao sought to modernise China and acupuncture and it came to western notice when President Nixon was treated using acupuncture during a state visit to China.
Acupuncture can be used for a wide range of medical conditions but recently Ive been asked about allergies migraines and general health issues. Ive used acupuncture successfully for years to treat allergies of many varieties. Ive often combined this with the use of Chinese herbs used as a distillation or herb tea.
Patients are often helped with allergic reactions to common items and migraine sufferers find that their symptoms are reduced or alleviated either completely or during the intense period. The Chinese used acupuncture for all manner of ailments including simply feeling under the weather. They believed that Chi or the vital life force that ran through the meridians or channels in the body had to be balanced between the yin and yang for perfect health.
Whilst I wouldn’t advocate a visit just because you were not feeling up to things on a given day it does go to illustrate the faith the ancients had in the practice and how central it was to their lives.
